Day 8

SUSAN: I made scrambled eggs for everyone for breakfast. Margo and Tim have new knives in their town home and I discovered just how sharp they are! I cut my finger pretty good and still had a fair amount of cooking prep to do for the potato salad so Margo made me a sealed bandage so I didn't get anything on the food.

JAMES: After a fairly arduous hike on the previous day, John and I went alone for a morning hike. We got good directions and headed for the Gold Hill Trail. The Gold Hill parking lot is close to Breckenridge. The plan for today was for John and I to drive John’s truck to the trail head and then for the rest of the pack to pick us up there so we could all go to Breckinridge.

We were picked up after our hike and we all went to Breckinridge to sightsee, eat lunch and mostly, see the giant troll. There is a lot to know about the giant troll and its creator, Thomas Dembo . He is a Danish artist who has created trolls all around the world. They are placed in specific settings and project a theme. They are pretty fun.

After getting the obligatory group photo, we went to the ski lift to get a trip to the top of the mountain. It’s a long way up in your gondola and in fact makes two stops on the way. It was quite busy on top, there are lots of condos, a gift shop and a couple of bars and restaurants. The gondola continues from here to convey off road bicyclists and alpine slide enthusiasts. There is also mini golf and other tourist activities. We hung out at the top for awhile and then headed down to get a bite to eat.

We went to one of the Geppert’s go-to places, Downstairs at Eric’s for lunch. It is apparent that Breckinridge has a lot of money. Prices are high for everything. I paid $15 for three okay chocolate cookies. I should have my head examined. The whole downtown main street is lined with boutiques, coffee houses, gift shops, high end clothing stores and even an oxygen bar!

After lunch we meandered back to the car along French Creek which rumbles and gushes through town. It’s a beautiful, refreshing walk. We drove back to the townhome. Ellie and family were arriving soon. For dinner, I cooked up a bunch of burgers and brats, Tim made his signature baked beans and Susan made the famous Tade family recipe potato salad. We packed it in.

Another round of Quiddler (JT comes out on top again), and then off to bed.
