UP - Day 4
Woke up early and showered so I could be done and out of the bathroom before anyone was awake. You are very limited when you have one bathroom and four adults! Breakfast at the apartment was quick and easy. We decided to eat up the eggs to avoid carrying them. Jim had cereal, Jean made a fried egg sandwich for her and Clay, and I had a fried egg and toast. We packed everything up and were out of the apartment by 8 am.
Our first stop was to see Miner’s Castle Point which was suggested by some of the people at the cruise yesterday. It was quite beautiful and there was a short walk to get closer to the rock that stood out on the point. One person there said that within the last year one of the rocks on this point collapsed. I guess that is not unusual. As we were walking up there were people walking down and somehow Jean discovered they were from the same town she is from in Ohio! What a crazy small world!
Once back at the top, Jim and I talked to the park ranger who said that a must see before we left the park was Sable Beach and the sand dunes there. So we decided we need to check it out.
Sable Falls was a good hour drive to the northern most tip of the park. We first hiked to Sable Creek that goes into Sable Falls and eventually into Lake Superior. We hiked down the 199 steps to get to the beach. The beach was very wide in this area and the rocks were a lot like the rocks on the Minnesota side of the lake, really diverse and beautiful.
After the beach walk we had to hike back up the 199 steps. It actually wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.
The other hike from this trailhead is Grand Dune Viewpoint. It was a relatively even trail until the end when we have some ups, and it got quite sandy…thus the beginning of the sand dunes. Once at the overlook it was all sand and the view to the lake was amazing! It was only about a mile out and back.
After the hikes we had our picnic lunch in the park and then headed back to to the Munising Falls visitor center so I could get a stamp for my National Parks Passport. Jean and I took an hour to do some shopping downtown Munising while Jim and Clay went grocery shopping.
By about 4 pm we were on the road to our next destination Ontonagon and the Superior Shores Resort where we had a reservation for two nights at the Lake Cabin. It was a two hour and 45 minute drive. We decided we would stop for dinner some place on our way there. We chose Skippers in L’Anse which was right on the water. It really was just a bar but good fish dinners. We tried to order the whitefish, but they were all out so two of us ordered perch and two ordered cod. They came back and told us that there was only one perch left, so three of us got Cod. It was very good!
We had our final drive to the Lake Cabin which was a little under an hour. It was dark now so when we arrived it was difficult to see to get into the place. But we fumbled through it. Once we turned the lights on we saw just how very rustic the place was. Our first order of business was trying to figure out how to turn on the heat. There looked like a stove on the hearth but we could not get it to start. There was also a second ‘stove’ looking device, but it kind of looked like a toy and we couldn’t get it on. I called the office and a guy named JT came over and told us the stove that looks like it should heat wasn’t working but the small stove that looked almost like a toy would work and he showed us how to turn it on. It was pretty easy and soon enough it was very nice and warm in there. I was shocked it heated the whole place.
This Lake Cabin has a great location … but very rustic. They haven’t thrown anything away since 1945! Lots of junk in here. It appears to have been added onto and currently has three bedrooms. Unfortunately the beds rooms are the oldest part of the place so there are only two prong electrical plugs which makes it challenging to charge our devices. We had to plug lots of things in the kitchen since there were three prong electrical plugs in there. My big take away is I should always travel with a two to three prong adapter.
Once things warmed up in the cabin, we were all tired so we hit the
