Day 8, 5/21/23

No rush this morning. It was a late night last night. Susan woke up early and made coffee. I woke up when a large, cold drop of water landed on my forehead. There is a leak in our bedroom ceiling. Our home, like most of the homes we’ve seen, appear to be prefab. It looks like they plop one or more modules on site and bolt them together. There are no foundations. The ground is so boggy and uneven that houses are built up off the ground on timbers. I’m not sure that quality is job one. When you walk across the floor you can feel it sag. The tiny shower sprays out on the bathroom floor as you try and get in. The windows in the bathroom collect water and are rotting slowly. With the near constant rain and wind, you wonder how long these units can hold up. People straggled out of bed, showered and had some breakfast. Susan went into high gear and packed both our bags, swept the floor and did a load of dishes. We were packed and in the car at 10 am sharp. The road to Reykjavik is not long and a relatively straight drive across the plains and hills. When we arrived, we drove to the old town commercial area and parked near the water.

We walked the shoreline. Right on the water is the iconic viking sculpture. Very close to the sculpture also on the water is the massive and beautiful Harna performance center. It’s a gorgeous ultra modern structure with a south facing plexiglass exterior. It’s beautiful inside and out. We toured and took a few photos. Then it was time to find some food. We walked the main drag and quickly found a good looking spot. They were just opening and we were the only customers for at least 20 minutes. We got food and drink and had a relaxing lunch. My last chance at authentic fish and chips before flying home.

After eating, we headed for Keflavik and our flight home. Dropping the rental car allowed us one last chance to get soaked before we headed home. It sucks to have to leave but it’s back to work to make more money to pay for our next big trips. Coming soon!
